Maintenance for July

My favorite form of meditation is gardening. To keep your yard looking great, regular maintenance is required. So, every month I will provide useful tips on how to maintain your gardens. (and I will do this at the beginning of the month).

For this month, since we are already half way throughit, I will list general rules to follow for the year:

~~Watering~~
*Summer- 3x week, 10-12 min each time
*Fall/Spring- 2x week, 8 min each time
*Winter- 1x week, 10 min (water before a freeze)

~~Pruning~~
*Summer- Prune spent blooms on Perennials
*Fall- Late in season, cut back Grasses and Perennials to ground
*Winter- Prune trees, evergreen shrubs, and roses
*Spring- Trim Ground Covers

~~Fertilization~~
*Summer- Lawn Fert in mid-summer with Dillo Dirt or Liquid Seaweed, Fertilize Veg Gardens
*Fall- Fertilize lawn early Fall with Compost Tea or Compost, Fertilize Shrubs and Veg Gardens
*Winter- plants and grass dormant, vegetable gardens can be fertilized
*Spring- Critical time. Fertilize Trees, Perennials, Lawn, Prep Garden Beds with Fert
(for shrubs and perennials I like to use Medina Hasta Gro products and for Veg Gardens I like to use my compost,Blood Meal or BioForm)

~~Mulching~~
*General Rule is to keep 2-3" of mulch on all garden beds and tree rings. Texas Native Hardwood is a great one, Cedar, and Pine Needles. Apply Fall and Spring.

~~Weed Control~~
*General Rule is to hand pull weeds for your daily meditation. Eat them. Spot spray Bermuda Grass and other stubborn weeds with a Vinegar Spray (from a Natural Garden Store).
*Apply Pre-emergent to Lawn in Late February. Apply Corn meal mix to Veg Garden before Spring planting.

~~Mowing~~
*Generally, mow lawns to 2" height. (Each grass requires slightly different mow heights). Mowing regularly makes a healthier lawn and thus less weeds.
