Aahhhh, the magic of trees! Now, I may have been accused of being a tree hugger, but really I am grateful for its life sustaining qualities.
What great things do trees do for us? You may think of the simple answers, but let's expand.....
They provide shelter, fruits, nuts, berries, wood, paper, rubber, medicine, shade, beauty, climbing.
Their leaves capture dust from the wind, and settle it to the ground. They drop leaves and fruits that compost and create more soil. Their roots secure the soil from eroding.
They breathe in CO2 from the air, and respire Oxygen. Some trees, like Pecans have ridges on their branches and trunks that guide water straight down its body to be soaked up by its roots. They guard against floods. Their wood is used by Beavers to build dams.
They are a wind block from the Northern cool air, or a wind funnel for breezes. They shade from the hot Summer sun, and drop leaves to allow warmth through in the Winter.
I am a BIG fan of Green Initiatives and Gold Star Rated Energy Efficient Building. BUT, I think trees should be given more credit. They are the only element that positively improves the site and creates a greater output of energy.
