Earth Bag Definition

Here is a description of the Earth Bag technique employed at our home project by Nick Moser, the project manager.

"Earth bags are a technique that use local soil to build a strong, efficient and beautiful house. Originally pioneered by Nadir Kahili of the Cal-Earth Institute, the technique has won several international awards for appropriate technology. In its essence, the technique is to take soil from the building site itself, fill the bags, and stack them into walls. The earth bag walls are incredibly durable and provide thermal mass for energy efficiency. The bags are then plastered with earthen plaster to seal the bags from exposure and further solidify the structure. For the interior, walls are plastered and a slab of specially mixed earthen materials create the finished floor. Earth bags are an innovative, efficient and environmental way to build a beautiful home." Nick Moser
