BAD Garden Products

There are a lot of BAD garden products out there and I can speak volumes to this. I find myself at Home Depot walking the chemical aisle and pushing the Weed and Feed products to the back or educating shoppers about what not to use. Some of these chemicals could have an immediate adverse effect on people, pets, insects, animal's health, or can cause cancer down the road.

70 and 80 million pounds of pesticides are annually sprayed on home lawns, trees, and shrubs.

Here is what NOT TO USE:

Fertilizers:
I would not use most any product made by Miracle Gro. Too much Nitrogen causes the excess to run off , this creates problems in our water systems and its not a sustainable nutrient source for your plants. We are trying to create a balance and mimic the master gardener, Nature. Scott's, Ortho, and Vigoro have the same issues with their products and only use their organic lines. Weed and Feed products by nature are counterintuitive and don't work. Yes, it allows for only one application to kill weeds and fertilize the good plants, but these applications should occur almost three weeks a part. Also these products carry a chemical called Atrazene, which is the most widely used herbicide in the United States and should be avoided when you read the ingredients. It has been found locally in Barton Springs in alarmingly high quantities. Click here to see a chart of common chemicals made available and extremely widespread.

Herbicides:

Don't use Ortho's Weed B' Gone, for one example has a cancer causing chemicals such as SODIUM 2,4-DICHLOROPHENOXYACETATE (2,4-D), Carcinogenic with evidence of casual relation to lymphoma, soft tissue sarcoma and other cancers ; neurotoxic; reproductive toxin. farmlands and homelands are being poisoned at alarming rates and can be avoided with careful balancing of organic products or calling a landscape professional who specializes in organic care.
