Corn Gluten Weed Suppressant

I posted about using safer more effective ways to preserve our beautiful landscapes without damaging the environment around us. Here is a great example of a re-purposing of a natural product for safe use in our lawns and gardens:

CORN GLUTEN. Very great stuff. It is about that time to put down pre-emergent down on our beds and lawns to prevent the weeds from popping up at the emergence of Spring. Then once we are well into Spring (end of March) you can fertilize, the good stuff.

Corn Gluten if a byproduct of the corn milling process. Its a non-toxic weed control that has a N_P_K ration of 9-1-0 (10% Nitrogen). It dries out seeds when the crack open to sprout. Its a powdery consistency best applied with a spreader. It also gives your lawn and garden a small dose of fertilization that is not like the super duper "Weed and Feed" products that give a tremendous dose of toxic chemical and then an explosion of Nitrogen.

You can pick up bags of Corn Gluten at some Garden Stores and certainly find them at General and Feed stores like Callahan's.
